Title: Motivating Users to Consider Recommendations on Password Management Strategies

Keywords: Motivation, Message Types, Password Management
Abstract: It has been proposed to offer users better recommendations on password management strategies. While we support this proposal, we worried whether people would consider and read such recommendations. To that end, we designed a total of nine different messages intended to motivate users to read recommendations on password management strategies and evaluated them in comparison to a control message. To maximise the effectiveness of our messages, we base them on well-established message types and on behavioural factors which have repeatedly been shown to influence human behaviour in the information security context. The most astonishing result for us was that the baseline condition performed as good as the motivational conditions.
