Abstract: Recently, Hu, Niu, and Yang proposed a remote user authentication scheme using smart cards. Although this scheme prevents several attacks, the scheme fails to establish a session key. Moreover, the scheme requires counters-synchronization and the server maintains a verification table. In order to remedy these drawbacks, this paper proposes a remote user authentication scheme which provides strong security with low communication- and computational-cost. In addition, the proposed scheme does not maintain a verification table, does not need synchronization, and establishes a session key. Furthermore, the security analysis and performance evaluation proved that the proposed scheme is feasible for smart cards.
