Title: The Usage of Body Area Networks for Fall-Detection
Author(s): Luigi La Blunda, Matthias Wagner
Reference: pp159-164
Keywords: Body Area Network, fall-detection, thresholdbased method, reliability, safety, ZigBee
Abstract: This paper presents a research that has the target
to analyze existing fall detection algorithm regarding different
falls and to develop a fully automated fall-detection system
based on Body Area Networks. The system should be able to
guarantee reliable detection and contact to emergency services
in case of falls. The principle to distinguish falls from activities
of daily life or fall-like activities is based on thresholds that are
set from the usage of the sensor combination (accelerometer
& gyroscope) which are integrated in a belt that is worn on
the hip. To provide accurate sensor measurements that are
fundamental for this safety critical system a calibration of the
sensors is needed.
