Abstract: The importance of information security cannot be denied. It has increasingly become an
integral part of our everyday lives. In line with some of the key issues relating to the
construction of a South African education and training system for the 21st century, this paper
argues that information security is both ‘a social and economic need’ and ‘an intellectual and
professional challenge’ and should therefore be regarded as a critical cross-field outcome. This
could help narrow the evident ‘information security gap’ that currently exists in undergraduate
IT/IS/CS curricula at South African universities.
