Data Communications for Navigation

The increasing popularity of unmanned aircraft, in conjunction with the need to provide high integrity and accurate navigational data has become a significant requirement for the navigation industry. Although a number of well known systems exist, such as GNSS and IMU systems, no current navigational techniques are able to support these aircraft in rapidly deployed, complex and electronically hostile operating environments. An area of research has begun that aims to use additional and alternative sources of information to meet these requirements, many of which concentrate on using imagery to provide navigation data. The significant challenges encountered by such systems relate to the difficulty of machine reading a live imagery steam in a system with limited processing power and poor image quality. Research has also been carried out into using civilian data communication networks for navigation. This research does not provision for scenarios where the environment is hostile and unpredictable, making the proposed solutions unreliable.
The aim of this project is to design novel data analysis, aggregation and fusion methods for data obtained from
aircraft communication systems. The data obtained can be used to aid the accuracy and integrity of current navigational systems and aid the use of other data sources for improved navigation robustness.
